The Role
This senior-level contract engagement places you at the center of a large-scale effort to strengthen and modernize network security infrastructure across a complex hybrid environment. As a technical authority on cloud and network security, you will guide firewall governance, shape segmentation strategy, and ensure that connectivity across on-premises and multi-cloud platforms meets the highest standards of security and reliability. You will work fully on-site in Austin, TX, embedded within a team where your expertise directly influences the agency's security posture and its ability to serve the public.

What You Will Do
- Architect, review, and govern firewall configurations and network security policies across enterprise and cloud environments
- Design and enforce network segmentation strategies that apply defense-in-depth principles to reduce risk exposure
- Lead secure connectivity and routing design across hybrid on-premises and multi-cloud platforms, including AWS, Azure, GCP, and OCI
- Serve as the senior technical authority and security advisor for network-related decisions, standards, and escalations
- Evaluate and improve network security posture as applications migrate from legacy on-premises systems to cloud infrastructure
- Develop and maintain thorough documentation of network architecture, security controls, and governance decisions
- Collaborate with cross-functional technology and security teams to align network design with organizational and compliance requirements
- Identify vulnerabilities and risk gaps in existing network configurations and drive remediation efforts

What We Are Looking For
• 12+ years in network engineering, enterprise or government environments
• Firewall architecture design, review, and governance experience
• Deep expertise in network segmentation and defense-in-depth strategies
• Hybrid on-premises and multi-cloud networking experience
• Cloud network security across AWS, Azure, GCP, and/or OCI
• Secure connectivity and routing design at enterprise scale
• Demonstrated role as a technical authority or senior security advisor
• Strong documentation and stakeholder communication skills
The ideal candidate brings over a decade of hands-on experience navigating the complexity of large-scale government or enterprise network environments, where security decisions carry significant operational consequences. You are equally comfortable designing architecture from the ground up and governing the day-to-day integrity of firewall policies and access controls. Your background reflects a career spent not just implementing network solutions, but owning them — advising leadership, setting standards, and ensuring that every layer of the network reflects a deliberate, defensible security posture. Experience spanning both traditional data center environments and modern cloud platforms is essential, as this role demands fluency in both worlds simultaneously.

Nice to Have
• Familiarity with Texas DIR Shared Technology Services (STS)
• Prior engagement supporting a State of Texas agency
• Knowledge of DIR policies and state-level security compliance frameworks
• Experience supporting application modernization or cloud migration initiatives
Candidates who have previously supported state government technology programs will find this environment familiar and will be positioned to contribute immediately. Knowledge of Texas DIR standards and shared services frameworks is a meaningful advantage, as the work is shaped by state-specific compliance requirements and procurement structures. Experience guiding application modernization efforts — particularly those aimed at improving security and long-term resilience — is also a strong differentiator for this engagement.
