About This Role

Senior Database Administrator (Oracle & MS SQL) — Contract | Hybrid | Livermore, CA --- About the Company A leading federal government IT company, this organization delivers mission-critical technology solutions in support of some of the nation's most important scientific and security initiatives. With a strong commitment to innovation, reliability, and operational excellence, they partner with federal agencies to build and sustain robust, secure infrastructure at scale. --- The Role An established federal IT organization is looking for a seasoned Senior Database Administrator to join their team on a hybrid contract basis in Livermore, California. This is a hands-on technical role for a database professional who thrives in complex, multi-platform environments and brings deep expertise across both Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server. You will play a central part in keeping critical database systems healthy, automated, and continuously improving — while also contributing to architecture decisions, migrations, and enterprise application support. --- What You Will Do As a Senior DBA, you will serve as a subject matter expert across a diverse portfolio of database technologies, taking ownership of reliability, performance, and security across the environment. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include: Designing, maintaining, and optimizing database platforms across multiple relational and non-relational technologies, ensuring high availability and resilience at all times. Building automation pipelines to handle provisioning, patching, backup, compliance checks, and routine operational tasks — reducing manual effort and increasing consistency across the environment. Developing and maintaining non-production environments that support active development and quality assurance workflows, keeping teams unblocked and release cycles on track. Conducting deep-dive query tuning and data model reviews to drive meaningful improvements in application performance and database-layer security posture. Supporting database architecture planning, cloud integration efforts, containerization initiatives, and cross-platform migration projects from design through execution. Constructing observability tooling — including dashboards, alerting rules, and operational runbooks — built from log and metric data, and actively participating in incident response and post-incident analysis. Collaborating on the implementation, configuration, and ongoing support of commercial off-the-shelf enterprise applications, including triage and customization activities. --- What We Are Looking For • 12+ years of hands-on database administration experience • Deep expertise in Oracle DBA across enterprise environments • Strong proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server DBA • Solid experience on Linux operating systems and platforms • Bash and Shell scripting for operational automation • Python scripting for database tooling and workflow automation • Demonstrated database performance tuning across complex workloads • Experience building and maintaining database automation frameworks The ideal candidate brings well over a decade of enterprise DBA experience and is equally comfortable deep in the weeds of query optimization as they are designing automation frameworks or contributing to architecture conversations. This role demands someone who has operated Oracle and SQL Server in demanding, high-stakes environments — ideally within government, defense, or similarly regulated sectors — and who understands how to balance performance, security, and operational stability on Linux-based infrastructure. Strong scripting ability in both Bash/Shell and Python is essential, as automation is a core expectation of the role rather than a secondary skill. --- Nice to Have • MongoDB administration experience • Cassandra administration in distributed environments • PostgreSQL administration • DynamoDB administration, including cloud-native patterns • MySQL administration • COTS enterprise application support and configuration Candidates who bring experience across NoSQL and open-source relational platforms will find immediate opportunities to contribute beyond the core Oracle and SQL Server workload. Familiarity with DynamoDB or Cassandra is particularly valuable given the organization's evolving cloud and distributed data footprint. Experience supporting COTS application implementations — including configuration, troubleshooting, and customization — is a meaningful differentiator for this role and will be weighted favorably during evaluation. --- What We Offer This is a hybrid contract position based in Livermore, CA, with onsite presence required twice per month — offering flexibility while keeping you connected to a collaborative, technically sharp team. You will work alongside experienced engineers and architects supporting infrastructure that genuinely matters, with exposure to a wide range of database technologies and modernization efforts that will strengthen and broaden your professional skill set. For the right candidate, this engagement offers the opportunity to make a visible impact on mission-critical systems while expanding your expertise across cloud, containerization, and multi-platform database environments.
